  • What's the point of Mercedes "Sandbagging" ? At this stage there is little anything any team could do to make up for the difference if Mercedes just came out and showed their true pace. Other than being able to say "HaHa, Gotcha". What is the benefit to Mercedes? It seems like it would be better to come out of the gates and put doubt and hopelessness into other teams before the season even starts. That way they feel like their on their back foot before Race 1.

  • I still think the merc will still be infront. Lets be real, not much has changed in terms of regulations so i doubt itll be much different. Maybe RB will close the gap a little. But I do believe that whilst merc is sandbagging, the difficulty lewis is having and how hard it looks to drive isnt sandbagging. Personally, I think theyll be very quick but itll be a struggle to drive for the first few races until they get it sorted out (if they havent already tbf)

  • That red border on the thumbnail might be unhelpful. I'll explain why. So I scroll through the newsfeed and see a title about F1 that seems relevant and I become interested... Pretty normal stuff. But I see the thumbnail and I'm sat there questioning myself, I say "There is a red bar on the bottom of the video, maybe I've watched this already" - Fortunately i doubted myself enough to look closer and see that really it's a border on the thumbnail. It's all minor stuff, but what if somebody does just see a red line on the bottom of a thumbnail on their newsfeed and think "meh seen it"?

  • There's a possibility Mercedes decided to put themselves at lower grid for more R&D allocation in 2022. They can do this aiming to dominate the next era by having a plenty of resource in 2022. Just a speculation though.

  • you can't say anything about the testing... testing is to learn about issues that you don't know. if you see that Mercedes drove almost al the time around with hard compound .. that is because they want to know how the car reacts... you don't need to test something you already know... the had the time last year

    petermulders1petermulders1Månad sedan
  • I think the Zoom between Scarbs and Windsor was interesting as they mentioned that the issue with Merc was a gear CHANGE, nor a gear box, and wondering if one of Mercedes tokens was a new rear structure. And if they were running testing with their 2020 rear end with a new 2021 gear box, it would explain both the shifting issues and the tailend instability. That would be some EPIC sandbagging of course, but if they show up for FP1 with a new rear wing, it’s over.

  • Mercedes may have underestimated what effect the new floor regulations would have on the car's aero and probably went in the wrong direction developing it, in my humble opinion.

  • You don't know what Mercedes was testing. And don't ignore that they had the hard tires on, so that tells me that they were satisfied with soft tire performance but wanted to get more data on less than optimal combinations.

  • IMO the reason the merc looks unstable is because compared to last years car it is. The drivers were so used to being able to just turn in that they're basically having to remember how to use a car which has a back end that isn't completely planted 100% of the time. Merc probably aren't slower than others, just slower than they used to be which is throwing the drivers off. They'll probably have it sorted by lights out in bahrain. Merc 1-2 calling it now.

  • I'm sure Mercedes were sandbagging when it comes to out and out pace. Everyone does that. But not binning it in corners or replacing gearboxes.

    Simon WatsonSimon WatsonMånad sedan
  • i am sure that mercedes is strong again, but not at the first race. their rear is very unstable compared to their usual standards. i don't think they are able to fix this for the first race. red bull already seems to be ready for the first race. this time they will collect points from the first race on and mercedes have to chase them. if mclaren is strong, then the mercs have to fight with more than one team and that will put them in a completely different position compared to the last years. i think that there power unit does not have an advantage over honda anymore. they have to run it at 100% all the time - contrary to last year. last year only a few times they where limited by overtemperature. this year that could happen more often because the need to turn up the engine to 100% because of the competition from honda. this competition only happened one time with the cheating engine from ferrari.

  • Every year Mercedes have done a tonne of mileage despite the sandbagging of their lap times. Sandbagging by not actually testing their car is a whole new level of over confidence. They definitely have issues to overcome before the season starts. They may well sort them out a win the first race, but at this stage they do look second fastest, at worst.

  • Possibly a noob question, so apologies in advance - I'm just wondering why more people aren't talking about the DAS ban for 2021 and how that may be having some impact on Mercedes' performance? I'm somewhat over only watching to see who finishes second these days, though I realize the smart money is on Mercedes showing up on race day, but is there no possibility that they've only started to realize problems with their design now because DAS was masking it to some extent before?

  • The best qualy time in Bahrain in 2020 was 1:27 or so. The best time was 1:29 by Versappen in testing, I think on 2022 prototype tyres so that's also something to consider. EVERYONE was sandbagging hard. Well sandbagging is a bit harsh but no-one was going all out. In regards to reliability because merc and aston had gearbox issues there's something to be mildly concerned about. Mclaren didn't but as far I know they don't use a Merc gearbox and use their own in house design. But because there's effectively 4 cars using the merc engine+gearbox combo, they'll have a lot of data and the issue will probably be resolved sooner rather than later. Only other things I got is Ocon is going to have a real hard time beating Alonso. You can say Alonso's one of the greats but he's been gone for almost 2 years. You'd expect Ocon to try to establish dominance even in testing. I think Ricciardo will beat Norris but not as confident about this one. This is based on both pairings probably running similar programs over the 3 days.
